I guess most people have been asked job interview questions that they find difficult to answer. Most interview questions are fairly routine and with a bit of preparation shouldn’t cause you too many difficulties.
However, when I have been interviewing people, there are some common questions that interviewees stumble on. Here are my top 3:
- So tell me about yourself…
I’d be very surprised if you haven’t been asked this one at every interview you have attended. It’s probably the most asked question because it sets the stage for the interview and it gets you talking. Be careful not to give the interviewer your life story here. You don’t need to explain everything from birth to present day. Relevant facts about education and your career are fine.
- What weaknesses or limitations do you have?
If you’re completely honest, you may be destroying your chance of getting the job. If you say you don’t have any weaknesses, you will come across as narcissistic and arrogant. This is a horrible question and one that politicians have become masters at answering! If you’re asked this question, give a small, work-related flaw that you’re working hard to improve. Example: “I’ve been told I occasionally focus on details and miss the bigger picture, so I’ve been spending time laying out the complete project every day to see my overall progress.”
3. Would you rather work for money or job satisfaction?
It’s not a very fair question is it? We’d all love to get paid a large salary for doing a job we love but that’s rare indeed. The best way to answer this question is to say that both are important. You can say that you would like to perform a job that you find satisfying and challenging and get a fair salary in return.
